History of Century Bathworks

Century got its start in 1946 in Paterson, NJ as Century Shower Enclosure Company. Occupying 5,000 sf of space, owner Mike Sectish saw it through its first few decades.  Crest, Caprice, and Lucette were the first three basic type extrusions and were all offered in aluminum.  Obscure glass was standard since privacy was important in those days.  Chrome or silver was the popular finish, followed by gold anodized.

In 1980, Michael MacMillan, John Hull, & David Rebele purchased Century Shower Enclosure Company, Michael MacMillan was named president, and the company name was changed to Century Shower Door.  Mr. MacMillan implemented the slogan “The Innovators” which set the stage for a dramatic expansion program.  In less than 3 years, the company moved to West Paterson to occupy 17,500 sf.  With three expansions since and the acquisition of Screens & Fabricated Metals in 1987, Century now occupies 122,000 sf.  Screens & Fabricated Metals manufactures screen doors, as well as mirrored closet doors which were originally produced by Century Shower Door.

Century was the first to offer a sleek European frameless sliding door to the American market, the Centec series, which was introduced in 1987. The upscale Glasstec series was introduced in 1990 offering fully frameless enclosures for all applications.  1990 also brought the high-end, framed Brassline series offering the richness of solid brass in heavy gauge framed enclosures. Semi-frameless hinged enclosures were added to the Centec line in 1997.

Century’s early prime markets were New Jersey, New York, & New England.  Later expansion included the addition of a distribution warehouse in Beltsville, MD in 1988 allowing distribution along most of the Eastern United States.  1994 saw yet more expansion with the addition of another warehouse in Bensenville, IL to better service the areas west of New Jersey.  The company utilizes its own fleet of trucks as well as common carriers for more distant shipments.

Century has adapted to a high-end market while maintaining the most extensive line of shower enclosures.  Our customer base numbers over 2000 active accounts.  Our staff has grown from 17 employees in 1980 to over 150 employees at the present time.

In order to grow geographically, Century Shower Door changed its name to Century Bathworks Inc. in 2003 anticipating the expansion of its product lines.  With the addition of a new Medicine Cabinet line in May of 2006, Century Bathworks is expanding distribution throughout the United States.  Sales Representatives have been added in many US states, and plans are in motion to have every state covered in the near future.  Additional distribution and manufacturing facilities are being explored to expedite delivery nationwide.
